As Flashy as Marilyn; as Down-home as Bill: Monroe brings new old reliables to Central Square (Originally posted 3/16)

While he continues to bask in the gastronomical glow of the Dudley Café (www.dudleycafe.com) and to celebrate the long-awaited addition of authentic Indian cuisine to the teched-out food court that is Kendall Square (www.shantiboston.com), restaurateur Solmon Chowdhury is far from resting on his building bouquet of laurels. In fact, while his NAGA nightclub is one of the hottest spots in Central Square (and FAR beyond), bringing international music and culture to the college-friendly community, Chowdhury is bringing it all back (adopted) home with his latest concoction- the upscale American eatery known simply as Monroe (www.monroecambridge.com).

Decorated with wood slats, Lucite chairs, and other contemporary complements, Monroe is an easy place to get into and one that surely invites multiple visits. The seasonal patio is another lovely locale to linger and watch the diversity of Central Square flow by. Whether or not you come to dance in the booming back room, Monroe offers great vibes and vittles.

Though the decor may evoke Europe (the wallpaper in the main dining area depicts the Berlin Wall), the Middle East (Sphinx heads decorate the tasting bar in the long back room) and other far-flung places that remind regular guests of its popular predecessor Moksa, the Monroe menu by Moroccan rockstar Youssef Boujena (Sel de la Terre, OM) is decidedly homegrown. From homemade chili bean soup and creamy kale Caesar salad to crab cake sliders and two-fish tartare to truffle cheese fries and two-flavored wings to Chef’s impressive charcuterie and cheese plates, the creative takes on comfort food start with the early courses and keeps rolling late into the night. Among the mains are grilled Atlantic salmon with saffron barley, rib eye steak with shitake demi-glace, Statler chicken with rich truffle mushroom risotto, abd marinated pork chop with baconed brussels. Monroe also offers fresh flatbreads and a board of burgers and handhelds that make to-go and delivery an easy option as well. While other venues are closing, Monroe’s kitchen keeps churning out the hits, including a bacon cheeseburger, pulled pork sandwich, Kobe dog, and a special late-night pizza for meat lovers. When your “last call” finally comes around, the vanilla bean bread pudding and enormous slice of chocolate cake make lingering tempting as well, whether you are there to drink, dine dance, or even have a business meeting in the open, inviting space.

While the sleek front-room bar is a great place to gather, eat, drink, and prepare for the wild fun of a night in the club (or just to chill on the cozy couches while catching the game or catching up with special people), the bar’s creative creations are available throughout the cement-floored space. From the eponymous Monroe with rye, Lillet, Drambuie, and orange bitters, to Cleopatra’s Juice Bar with Elyx vodka, grapefruit, Campari, Prosecco and sage, to the Cherry Coke made with Chivas 12-year whiskey, and the Aphrodite with Stoli Elit, yogurt, Licor 43 and a cinnamon stick, it is hard to go wrong on any round on any night. For grape fans, the glassed-in wine room houses attractive stacks of bubbly, rose, red, white and dessert-friendly options. There are also a handful of bottles and two hands-worth of draughts from around the corner and around the world. And if you need a little something to ease your way back home after the partying has finally ended, Monroe also offers one of the most satisfying tea bars in town, with new exotic flavors landing all the time.

So next time you want a great night club that can actually be your home base for an entire night, or just a real regular place to make your new regular, move on to Monroe- You may never move again!
