I was recently in Harvard Square promoting my book about the Ivy League when I came upon a refrigerator outside the church on Mass Ave and Church Street.
Apparently, it was there so people could donate not only canned foods and such for those in need, but also fresh food.
Especially as I work closely with organizations like Mazon and WISHDISH that help those facing food insecurity, I thought this was a GREAT idea!
Apparently, I am not alone!
In fact, Mark Bucher, who runs the restaurant chain Medium Rare (about which I recently raved), is involved with an organization called Feed the Fridge that apparently does the same thing in and around Washington, DC!
Not only does Feed the Fridge help those who need food, it also helps those who make it by paying area restaurants to fill the refrigerators so those who need food can get it, even if they are in what might otherwise be considered a food desert.
In just a few years, the program has grown to include 30 refrigerators and now serves over 700,000 free meals, paying area chefs over $2 million, most of which has been raised from private donations.
Even if you do not live in the DC area, I would urge you to get involved with this program, just as I would recommend that you enjoy a meal at Medium Rare.
On November 27 from 10-4, you can do BOTH by visiting Medium Rare to participate in their 18th annual Free Turkey Fry, during which they will give away nearly 600 fried turkeys to people in need while raising funds for Fill the Fridge.
If you want to support those facing food insecurity and homelessness in Boston or New Orleans, WISHDISH is another excellent choice.
Either way, it’s time to feed the fridge for those who have trouble feeding themselves.
