Though I am admittedly a bit of a dilettante who does everything from talk about food on the radio to interview authors on TV to write my own books to teach at a prison and on and on, I still hold fast to the premise that it is often best to do one thing and do it right.
That’s why I was so intrigued when I was invited to dine at Medium Rare at the Arsenal in Watertown.
While many other steakhouses try to impress you with the sheer variety of cuts and options they have, Medium Rare falls somewhere between In-N-Out Burger and Ken’s Steak House by focusing on a very limited menu that consists of a $35 prix fixeBARGAIN that includes hearty, crusty, homemade bread, a signature salad with their own house dressing, and one cut of secret special sauce-swept steak served – as you might expect – medium rare (unless, of course, you ask for it prepared differently), as well as a few open secret off-menu items (including delicious vegetarian options!) that are well worth investigating.
The beverage and dessert lists are also limited, but they hit every note – from wines listed by such terms as “chic” and “powerful” to curated craft beers and signature cocktails like the pineapple mule and a warm apple cider spiked with Bourbon. No matter which options you choose, be sure to save room for the massive hot fudge sundae or chocolate cake and the Bazooka gum that is presented with the check for a final fun flourish!
If you want a bit more variety, the weekend brunches are a great option, as the steak service is enhanced with an award-winning 24-hour soaked French toast and famous Benedict with steak and mushroom hash that is worth the trip alone!
Though I rarely promote national chains, the team at Medium Rare made me feel as if I were in a family restaurant, attending to my every need and even writing on the paper tablecloth to make sure that I was assured to get exactly what I wanted.
To quote Goldilocks- it was “just right”!
