Something for the Older Folks to Pick: Lookout Farm adds cider to the mix (Originally posted 3/16)

For over 350 years, Belkins Lookout Farm in Natick (http://lookoutfarm.com) has been a place to go for truly delicious family fun. From pick-your-own apples and pumpkins to train and hayrides, a massive play and petting area, horse and even camel rides(!), there is something for everyone, especially if you have little ones.

In an effort to expand their offerings (and their season), the Lookout team has added something else that is well worth looking out for- a cidery!

Using their own apples and three centuries of ingenuity and creativity, the farmers at Belkins have come up with a menu of flavor combinations that are unlike any other in terms of freshness (i.e., of the ingredients) and freshness (i.e., of the flavors). From the staple Farmhouse Blend to fresh fruit-infused Super Berry and the appropriately spicy Barn Burner to the differently-warming Fireside (which can be enjoyed as such in the tasting room/live entertainment hall) each variety reveals a perfect combination of painstaking research (Oh what a hardship it is to taste cider all day!) and freewheeling farm fun. There’s even one made with Tazo chocolate!

Though the new addition clearly intends to expand the hours and age range of Lookout visitors, there is plenty for underagers to do in the converted greenhouse, including games (checkers, cornhole, etc.) and non-alcoholic cider which is every bit as delicious (designated drivers take note!). For visitors of all ages, the Taproom also offers locally-sourced charcuterie, fresh-baked flatbreads, and hot pretzels with Raye’s mustard from Maine.

As with the rest of the Farm, the cidery offers tours of the 6,500-square-foot production facility and the 180+ acres that produce 29 varities of apples (19 of which are exclusively produced for cider) that allow guests to see just how fresh, additive-free and hand-crafted their ciders are. But once you pull up a seat in front of the copper-topped, apple acid-burned bar with its converted Ford tractor grille taps, the learning may fade but the enjoyment will surely linger, especially for those who take home Lookout hats, t-shirts, cider four-packs and freshly-poured growlers.

So continue to bring the kids. Heck- bring the neighbors kids! Just know that now there is an even greater reward waiting at the end of a day on the farm.
