The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s forthcoming segments:
Charles Smith Wines
I may not know wine like our friend Anthony Giglio, but I know what I like and I also know a good story when I hear one.
Charles Smith is a former rock band manager who worked with such notable bands as the Raveonettes and Psyched up Janis. Though he has left that life behind, he has not abandoned the lifestyle. These days, the long-haired genius can be found in the Seattle area at the west coast’s largest urban winery, stomping grapes and taking names with his ever-expanding but always carefully curated line of wines.
As the only two-time recipient of Winemaker of the Year awards from both Food &Wine and Wine Enthusiast magazines, Smith clearly knows what he is doing. And as one of the few larger wineries to use no Mega Purple or other additives, he is also leading the way.
Most importantly, however, is the taste. And as over 350 scores of 90 or above in international tastings attests, Charles got that down too! From kicky Kung Fu Girl Riesling to sinister smooth Velvet Devil Merlot to newer additions like the Italian-inspired Casa Smith and Vino lines and the periodically-labeled Wines of Substance, the outsides may be black and white but the insides are bright and colorful.
So whether you want to impress a friend or just enjoy a glass or two, tell ‘em Charles sent you!
