After a long day of struggling against The Man, we all need a place to sit back with fellow workers and strivers and get our just desserts (and WHAT DESSERTS!) for a job well done.
Fortunately, there is Democracy Brewing (www.democracybrewing.com).
Owned and operated by a board that is made up of experienced brewers, laborers, and unionists, Democracy is not only generous to their workers (all of whom have been enjoying a living wage of $15 an hour since the place opened on Independence Day) but to their hard-working guests as well. From locally-sourced scratch-made food that rivals many of Boston’s more bourgeoisie eateries to a beer list that is imported all the way from the basement, Democracy has something for everyone and is a good place to remember that, red or blue, we are all red white and blue.
When you walk into the open, airy, honest brick and wood space (with its traditional Irish snug in the back, a roll-in piano that features the legendary talents of Mel Stiller on Fridays, and a rentable room that can hold up to 80- and that hosts comedy and movie nights, complete with its own bar!), you feel welcome. And whether you sit at one of the communal tables, the long bar down the let side or the more secluded spots on the right (neither side is better than the other!), you are sure to enjoy an amazing meal and maybe make a few new allies.
From the worth-the-trip beer pretzel app to the equally visit-worthy deep-fried Fluffernutter (which, like most items on the expansive menu, is sourced and inspired by local tastes and flavors), the options are appetizing and wide-ranging. In addition to creative selections of popcorns, salads, pizza and sandwich bagels and mac and cheese-based offerings, there are also a variety of burgers and fries (French or beet), as well as a fine and flavorful fish n’ chips, chicken schnitzel, and other local and international favorites that will make any local or visitor feel at home. Even the bathrooms are separate but equal!
As for the mash tun-to-pint glass beer selection, it also ranges in international inspirations from traditional American ales like the Worker’s Pint and Suffragette Pale Ale to the Consummate Rioter IPA, the 1919 Strike Irish-American Stout, and other rotating soon-to-be faves, any and all of which can be enjoyed as pints, in flights, or as hand-labeled growlers. There are plans for Maker’s barrel-aged beers and even a room downstairs labeled “Cider Room,” so be sure to drop by often (as if that would be an issue with all this great stuff going on!).
So the next time you are done in by your labors and need a place to rally, drop by Democracy Brewing. It is a great place for your next beer summit or other social gathering.
