The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:

While I continue to salivate about the possibility of a more local opening, whenever I am in the DC or Philly area, I make sure to go to at least one of the growing family of Founding Farmers restaurants. These amazing venues combine recipes from those who made our country great with produce from the farmers who continue to do so.

In this second edition of their popular cookbook, the founders of Founding Farmers share not only the tricks of the trade that keeps their large yet cozy venues packed with happy diners, but also the stories of the people who make sure every guest is satisfied- from the farmers who provide the ingredients to the servers and staff who prepare and deliver them to the artists who make the restaurants visually appealing as well. The book also enlightens readers on ways to match the restaurant’s gold seal environmental awareness, covering topics ranging from bee keeping to composting to the history of food in America. It is a comprehensive and comfortable guide to eating well while doing good.

While the many informative sidebars and engaging, the main focus of the book is the recipes. These range from a simply delicious egg salad sandwich to their famed eggs Benedict Arnold, handmade pasta to slow-braised short ribs, and Uncle Buck’s beignets and New Orleans French toast to New York egg creams. Each recipe is presented simply with pictures that make your MOUTH water (especially if you have been fortunate enough to have tasted the real thing!).

So the next time you are in DC or Philadelphia, be sure to visit Founding Farmers. In the meantime, be sure to pick up the handbook and found your own favorites!
