The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:

Though I still cry when I think that Andy Husband’s Tremont 647 and Sister Sorel are gone, I am happy to say that 2013 James Beard Rising Star Tim Maslow has taken over the two-sided space and created a funky combination that somehow fits the name Whaling in Oklahoma, which refers to an irrelevant rule that, like so many in Maslow’s kitchen, was meant to be broken.

With a front room that evokes a Japanese seaside (the inspiration of much of the menu) and a back area that looks more like a hunting lodge, Whaling is funky and fun and the food is worth the trip as well!

The dining menu is divided into groups that include raw, simmered, fried, and grilled and dishes feature such ingredients as raw fatty beef, Asian pear, salt-grilled Hamachi and other Japanese gems, as well as more domestic meats like chicken and Salisbury steak. If you cannot decide, Chef Maslow offers an “all you can eat” sampling menu that allows him to flex his creative muscle even further for trusting fans who clamor for the kitchen-side seats and crowd the bars in both spaces, both of which offer entire sets of Sake as well as a breadth of beers and clever cocktails, many of which (like the rare Suntory Toki Whisky Highball) are also illuminated by the Land of the Rising Sun.

So even if you despise whaling or have never been to Oklahoma, a visit to Whaling in Oklahoma is an edible excursion that is not to be missed!
