The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:

As part of Haborfest and all the historic festivities that go on in and around Boston for Independence Day, I took my family for a tour of the Old North Church & Historic Site that included its famous bell-ringing chamber and storied underground crypt.

During the tour, I was also invited to get a behind-the-scenes look at how chocolate was made in the days of Paul Revere.

Located in Old North’s historic Clough House, Captain Jackson’s Historic Chocolate allows visitors to experience chocolate as it was enjoyed by some of Boston’s most famous Revolutionary-era patriots. Costumed educators demonstrate how cacao beans were heated on an open fire, ground by hand, and spiced with flavors like cinnamon, anise, and even red pepper then served like hot cocoa.

In addition to getting a literal taste of the colonies in the chocolate exhibit, guests can check out the adjacent Patriots Corner Gallery, which hosts rotating exhibits related to themes of community, courage, and active citizenship. And, of course, there is a gift shop, from which chocolate lovers and history lovers can purchase a sweet souvenir.

So the next time you get hungry for history, drop by the Old North Church & Historic Site and be sure to save room for dessert!
