The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:
As the Jewish holidays approach, many people are thinking about old family recipes and what they will serve for the New Year and after the Yom Kippur fast.
Among our favorites are Michael’s Deli and Café Landwer in Brookline, but a bit to the south, another great chef is expanding his menschy menu.
Known for his great food truck The Chubby Chickpea and also for his pop-up beer gardens that have taken the Greater Boston are by sudsy storm), Chef Avi Shemtov has been exploring Spanish and other influences that make his Israeli menus so popular among Jews and Gentiles alike. In the process, he has added such Sephardic stars as the traditional darkened egg dish huevos haminados(each of which costs just $.50 each!), a fried pimento labneh, a Sephardic chopped salad, and other soon-to-be classics that stir in flavors from the Middle East and the Iberian Peninsula. Among the most popular of these is his Yemenite fried chicken sandwiches, which allow guests to take the flavors of the Middle East wherever they go.
So as you gather with family and friends or just grab a bite downtown, look for the Chubby Chickpea and explore another great take on traditional Jewish food.
