The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:
Each year, over $160 billion worth of perfectly good food is wasted in the US alone. Throwing food away not only robs people of nutrition, it also shows a lack of respect to the people who prepare the food and also to the environment.
That is why we champion organizations like Three Squares New England, Share Our Strength, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and what is among the latest of the growing team of food caretakers, Food for All.
Created at Harvard’s School of Public Health and funded by Kickstarter, the Food for All app helps users find places near them that have extra food that they are willing to sell at a discounted price, rather than throw it away.
Among the hundreds of top-tier eateries that are participating are such local faves as Boloco, El Pelon, and Boston Public Market mainstays Jennifer Lee’s Bakery and Red Apple Farm. Users simply place orders through the app and then go by the eatery during the pre-closing time window to pick up the food. As the diner gets food and the server gets much more than they would from dumping it, everyone wins!
So the next time you want to stave of hunger for yourself while doing more for others as well, download Food for All and help show respect for the food space.
