The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s segments:

While many so-called performance beverages have been shown to be bunk and many others that once claimed to have added protein or other benefits have dropped their claims (and their value), Medfield’s own Zelus Beer Company has endured. How? Well perhaps it is just by drinking their own product!

After all, in addition to having slightly less alcohol than most beers, Zelus alsoadds in a mixture of brew salts and minerals to create more electrolytes than your average beer, making it a sports drink for people who do not want to have to brush their teeth after drinking or just those who enjoy a great-tasting beer and are happy to get a little extra boost from it.

As they were created by marathon runners and other active acolytes, it may be no surprise that Zelus is so relatively good for you. What may surprise, however, is the wide range of delicious varieties they offer, including a traditional German Festbier, their Lyte Speed hoped white ale, a milder New England ale called race Pace, Competitor IPA, their Light into Dark winter porter, and the recently-reworked Long Run apricot pale ale.
While Zelus is available all over eastern MA (including at many restaurants), there are plans in the works for a tap room in Medfield, so you might want to start warming up now to run (or drive) over there.

In any case, the next time you want a refreshing beer at end (or even the beginning!) of an active day or – say – Race Mania at BU on March 24), try a Zelus. You will soon be a zealous fan too!
