PLEASE support your local food providers and STAY WELL!

We have been talking a good deal lately about our many food friends who are doing more than their share to help others people in their communities. But what about helping those that are not people?

I was recently at the Franklin Park Zoo and noticed that many of the hand sanitizer dispensers that they have laid out along the well-designed one-way, socially-distanced visitor route were filled with sanitizer by the friendly folks at Dirty Water Distillery, who have also donated over 1,000 gallons to first responders and entire municipalities as well. In so doing, they have not only helped individuals and not-for-profit organizations like the Zoo, they have also helped open educational and family opportunities for their friends and neighbors on the South Shore and in Greater Boston as well.

As the Plymouth-based company was started by a PhD in physics and led by a chemist, it may not be such a surprise that Dirty Water Distillery can make enough hand sanitizer for a literal zoo-full of people! What may be surprising is how many beverages they make and how good each one is!

Using two handmade stills, the Dirty Water folks turn out a pair of differently, aged but similarly tasty rums and a raft of charcoal-filtered, corn-based vodkas that come in naturally-infused flavors like cucumber lime, ginger, horseradish, Columbian roast coffee, Gerb’s chocolate, and even bacon! Their famed gin drink Bog Monster uses locally-sourced cranberries while their Pioneer Gin uses locally sourced juniper berries, and their canned cocktails and cordials like the spicy Lithuanian brew known as Velnias, the sweet and spicy Bog Witch, and a signature Limoncello are great for sipping, sharing, and even gifting.

Life these days can certainly seem zoo-y. Fortunately, our friends at Dirty Water Distillers are here for us whether we are at a real zoo or just looking for something to calm the animals closer to home.
