The ART of Great Food (and Ice Cream)

In my constant search to find great places to find great food made by great people from our great community (and beyond), I recently came upon a place – actually a series of places – that not only sells some of my favorite brands that I’ve talked about before (some MANY times!), but also a huge selection of soon-to-be-favorites!

Run by the husband-and-wife team of Art and Jen Negaryan, Art’s Specialties has everything from chocolate, coffee, and cookies to cheese and crackers to oils and spices to international foods that are hard to find ‘round here, as well as a wide array of local and international beverages that ranges from beer and wine to cider and sake. They even have an entire set of flavored olive oils and vinegars that are delicious to taste and perfect for any recipe or gift package.

Speaking of gift packages, Art and his talented team are more than happy to help you pick out the perfect presents for any friend or colleague.

And while many suppliers have been raising their prices, Art and Jen do all they can to make it easy and affordable to try new things so you too can find new favorites.

When you want to reward your great taste, head across the street from the Belmont store to Art’s Creamery or to the Sherborn store or soon to a new location near the Cambridge/Arlington line, where flash-frozen flavors from New City Microcreamery, Nightingale Ice Cream, and Van Leeuwen and their own Ice Cream Bike Sandwiches, all of which have proven so popular that they are staying open all year!

With locations in Belmont, Carlisle, Maynard, and Sherborn, there is probably a store near you. And if not, go to www.artsspecialties.com and www.artscreamery.com to see what is new and what you will be enjoying next.

“…PASS THE BEER NUTS!”

While the Boston Beer Company continues to strain at the definition of “microbrewery” as they continue to release more delicious varieties of beer to go with almost any food or event, it is good to know that another beer-loving company has begun to create foods that go perfectly with their beers.

Created by a pair of North Carolina women, Sippin Snax Gourmet Bar Snacks offers a collection of nuts, pretzels, and other sweet and savory snacks that go well not only with Sam Adams but with any other beverage…or just on their own!

Originally known as Hops + Nuts, the recently-revived sipper-savvy snack suppliers offer craft peanuts topped with beer salt, lager-lovin’ lime essence, “savree” aromatic herbs, or cocoa, espresso, and porter beer and also a flavor-bursting bar mix that features peppery peanuts, honey sweet sesame sticks, and piquant pretzels that will surely have you asking for more snacks and drinks to wash them down. For those who prefer other adult beverages, Sippin Snax has wine-washed nuts that pair perfectly with a Pinot or Merlot.

While this new set of snacks is sure to stir up fans fast, the original Hops + Nuts products are reliably delicious as well and include beer-flavored pretzels and peanuts that are topped with hot peppers and others that are meant to be paired with IPAs.

Perhaps the most notable pairing of all, however, is the one that Sippin Snax made with Sam Adams as part of the Brewing the American Dream entrepreneur showcase – Samuel Adams Boston Lager Craft Peanuts. Not only do they go great with Sam’s legendary brews, but the hand-crafted seasoning also mics the flavors of the original craft beer and can help that Boston Beer signature sudser shine in a bottle or a stein.

It’s so brilliant- it’s nutty!

FRE TO INDULGE

While I started my writing career as a music critic, as I got older and less able to function after staying for the last encore, I started to review dinner and the opening act, which eventually led me to my focus on food.

Another change has been the amount of alcohol I can handle.

Fortunately, I have found suitable substitutions like Sober Carpenter ciders, non-alcoholic beers from Partake and hop-infused beverages from HOP WTR, and wines from Fre (that’s “free” but with only one “e,” as the other was apparently removed with the alcohol).

Using a revolutionary centrifuge technology, Fre removes the alcohol from fully-fermented wine. In the process, a lot of the calories drop out too, making it even easier to enjoy multiple glasses. And as they offer such popular varietals as cabernet, chardonnay, merlot, rosé, sauvignon blanc, and even blends, there are multiple reasons to do so!

While you still need to acknowledge that you are of legal drinking age when you visit frewines.com (as it technically has less than .5% alcohol in it, which is the same as in most kombucha), once you are there, it is easy to find out more about their wines and to find your next favorite. In addition to a link to their Napa-born Luminara line, the site also has recipes by Liquid Muse founder Natalie Bovis-Nelsen and seasonal suggestions for celebrations that give you more reasons to enjoy. As I have been taking my book on the Ivy League and my author interview series to various venues, Fre is great because most bookstores, libraries and senior center allow it and my guests love it!

You will too!

ONE LAST ROUND

Even though COVID keeps hanging around, it’s finally getting cool enough to start thinking about heading inside to eat.

But before you hibernate, our friends at Harpoon are making a convincing argument for a few more hours al fresco.

At the Harpoon Beer Garden which is located just outside the Boylston T Stop doors on the skirt of Boston Common, hardy New Englanders and their visitors can enjoy fresh draft beer from Harpoon’s growing menu of faves (including their signature IPA as well as beers from Long Trail, Clown Shoes, and even the popular pairings with Dunkin’!), along with Polar seltzers, margaritas made with Harpoon-sourced alcohol, and (my favorite!) a warm and warming cider that you will want to mull over for some time.

If you need delicious food to absorb and complement your adult beverages, Harpoon has partnered with their Seaport neighbors at Rosa Mexicano to offer hearty and satisfying tacos and chips with freshly-made guac.

In addition to great food and drink, the Beer Garden (which is scheduled to be open through Halloween and to reopen in May) also offers curated culture on Emerson College’s UnCommon Stage that ranges from locally-sourced musicians and dancers (some of whom offer lessons to patrons!) to Harpoon’s famed Flannel Fridays which bestow a bespoke drink holder to anyone who continues to embrace the Grunge esthetic. If not, the Garden even sells Harpoon gear (including those made in partnership with Life is Good)!

Winter is coming but that doesn’t mean we can’t rage against the dying of the light with some delicious food and drink and plenty of friends!

See you in the Garden!

HAR-WOO-N

Though the Boston Red Sox can be a Wild Card (if they are lucky!), a good time is nearly guaranteed at beautiful Polar Park when you catch a Worcester Red Sox game.

This, year, that is even a safer bet as our other friends at Harpoon Brewery have partnered with Pawtucket’s greatest import to craft WooSox Lager – a flavorful and full-bodied golden lager with an ABV of 4% that makes it great for game day or any day.

In addition to being on tap at Polar Park (where other local legends like Table Talk Pies, lobster rolls, and, of course, Polar Beverages are always available as well), WooSox Lager is also available on draft or in 16oz cans at select retailers and restaurants. To find it (or any favorite Harpoon creation), go to www.harpoonbrewery.com/beer-finder/.

While any day at Polar Park is sure to be fun, gastronomically speaking, there will be extra joy in the hometown of the smiley face on July 30, when the famed Food Truck, Beer & Bev Fest returns with over 20 trucks, as well as 70 craft beers and other beverages, live music, games, and other family fun that will fit the bill even if you don’t like baseball.

If you can’t make it for the Fest, there are still plenty of beverage options at the Park, including a wide range of Harpoon-crafted faves like their classic IPA, low-alcohol Rec League, and unfiltered white and blueberry beers, as well as products made in partnership with Dunkin’ Donuts and the new Harpoon Summer Style which brings the bright and sunny vibes of Life Is Good.

Play ball? Maybe.

Love life. Drink beer? YES!

BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME

Though I grew up in the Merrimack Valley, my writing career first took root when I lived in Marblehead.

And when you consider that my family shopped at Shubie’s all the time, it may be no surprise that I now write about great independent food makers.

As they have been around for over 75 years, it is a safe bet that I am not the first person to fall in love with the wonderful wares of independent makers with help from the Shube family.

From freshly-prepared foods, handcrafted salads and sandwiches, and customized cakes at their recently-renovated Foodbar to candies and treats from other local legends like Harbor Sweets and a wide selection of gifts that includes great books to wine and spirits from around the corner and around the world, Shubie’s has everything you need to feed your family, sparkle a party host, and find a new favorite every time you visit!

If you need help finding new favorites, be sure to take suggestions from third-generation Shubie, Dougy.

If you need help finding great food for more than just yourself, Shubie’s also carters and consults on menus that are perfect for any occasion. And while a visit to the store is always fun, Shubie’s also offers online consultation and ordering and can deliver even to far-flung festivities beyond the beaches and beauty of the North Shore so you can keep enjoying even if you do not live nearby anymore (though I hope to go back soon!).

A NEW GEO-SPACE FOR JAZZ

With the passing of local lions like Fred Taylor and Eric Jackson, the Boston Jazz scene has not been what it once was.

Even though the great rooms like the Savoy and Pauls’ Mall are long gone, there are still holdouts like Sculler’s and Wally’s keeping the Berklee-fed Boston sound alive.

Recently, a new space opened in the offices of a company that knows space!

Feldman Geospatial has been supporting the physical structure of cities and towns for over 75 years.

Now, with the opening of the Jazz Nights series at Long Live Beerworks (which is housed at 152 Hampden Street in Boston), the Feldman team will bring more soul to their structures than ever.

Long Live has made its own mark with its Black Cat double IPA, Rox Pils Italian Pilsner, Coffee Cake Bites Imperial Stout, and new varieties coming on all the time. With their locally-crafted brews inside and locally-sourced murals and food trucks, the Feldman series is homegrown through and through. And throughout the new music series, the music will be as well!

From Alex Alvera and Mango Blue to Gonzalo Grau and Plural to the core Boston Jazz trio known as The Fringe, Jazz Nights will bring Grammy winners and garage band heroes together in open-ended nights of music, beer, food, and local culture.

The Boston Jazz scene may have changed, but if new offerings like Jazz Nights at Long Live presented by Feldman Geospatial are any indication, it is alive and well!

L’CHAIM

Now I get to talk about two of my favorite food-related things – Michael’s Deli and beer!

As anyone who follows us knows, one of our favorite friends in the industry is Steve Peljovich of Michael’s Deli in Brookline. Not only does he have the best corned beef and other deli favorites around, but he gives more back to the food community and the larger community and almost anyone else around.

On April 7 from 3 to 5 PM, Steve will be participating in a special Relay for Life event at Exhibit A Brewing taproom and gallery in Framingham.

Relay for Life raises money for cancer research. Proceeds from this event will benefit both the American Cancer Society and the Boston Hope Lodge, which houses cancer patients as they go through their difficult treatments.

What makes the event all the better is that Steve’s gastronomic co-conspirator will be none other than Ivan Pulecio of Hearth Pizzeria in Needham, who is also on the podium for restaurant industry mensches.

Steve and Ivan have faced more than their fare shares of health challenges, but they keep coming back and giving back more and more!

Add the creatively handcrafted beers from Exhibit A and live music from Alison Keslow and The Earthtones to the great food from Michael’s and Hearth and this should not be just a great fundraiser but a great time.

AND it’s for a great cause too!

THE GREATEST BREW ON EARTH

I was recently privileged enough to spend some time in the beautiful environs of Utah. While the skiing was good (at least compared to out east) and the new flag inspiring, one of my favorite finds came as I was headed back to the airport to come home.

Just off the highway between Park City and Salt Lake City is Park City Brewing, a comfortable place to eat, drink, and recuperate from a hard day on the slopes or at the office.

With mylar igloos out front to facilitate dining al fresco even in a champagne blizzard and a small but complete brewing set in the back to facilitate the venue’s delicious malt-based creations, Park City Brewing offers locally-inspired and made beers, hard seltzers and other refreshing treats along with great comfort food. From malty and slightly sweet beer-infused pretzel mounds to Silvercreek bratwurst and chicken sandos that fill your mouth with flavor and just call out for a frosty following of one of the venue’s well-crafted brews to hand-crafted caramel corn with nuts, Park City Brew has far more than beer but the beers are worth the trip on their own! The Mexican lager is muy auténtico and their famed Powder Buoy pilsner pays tribute to the local weather patterns that have made the area so famous among skiers. They also offer their own root beer and a rotating raft of seasonal and experimental flavors- many of which get demanded again and again by regulars and visitors alike.

Utah may claim the greatest snow on earth, but the beer is not so bad either, especially at Park City Brewing.

DUNKIN’ SCORES AGAIN

It must be teaching season because I have been talking a LOT about coffee and other ways to get going in the morning.

Having already sung the praises of new faves like IQ Joe and Kickstarter coffees, I would be reticent if I did not check in with some old friends as well.

While they may be best known for giving America something to run on, Dunkin’ has recently expanded their partnership with Harpoon Brewery by not only bringing back their popular Dunkin’ Pumpkin flavor but also by jumping on the burgeoning beverage bandwagon of ready-to-drink spiked beverages.

As the coffee drinks are dairy free, there is no “regulah,” but the set of 6% ABV coffee-based refreshers ranges from the rich and classic taste of original to a bold and chocolatey mocha, a creamy and smooth vanilla, and a sweet caramel iced coffee. There is also a quartet of 5% ABV teas that start with slightly sweet and then go a bit wild with the addition of mango pineapple and strawberry dragonfruit. For the golfing set, there is even an alcoholic Ahnold Pahlmah that combines equal portions of black tea and fresh lemonade with a twist of malt liquor.

Though the flavors may be favorites to young and old alike (and surely will be for those who are yet to try them), as these beverages are for adults only, Dunkin’ has been wise enough to give them their own domain – https://dunkinspiked.com – and to sell them only in age-appropriate venues, either as single 19 ounce cans or in variety packs of 12 ounce cans that will help you stop runnin’ at the end of the day or just run a bit more mellowly in the middle.

I hate to mix sports metaphors, but if Dunkin’ Pumpkin is any sign of what Harpoon and Dunkin’ can do together, Dunkin’ Spiked is sure to be a slam dunk!
