Bon appétit!

Especially as people continue to deal with Covid and other repirarory issues and as so many are becoming gmore aware of their health, so-called “superfoods” like turmeric, ginger, and garlic have become more popular than ever.

Unfortunely, many people do not know how to get enough of these ancient ailment annihalators in their daily diets.

Dorot Gardens has come up with a solution, however. Instead of using powders or pills, they pre-portion and pack these illness-fighting ingredients (as well as savory deasonings like basil, parsley, dill and cilantro) in pre-measured, all-natural, and vegan- and kosher-friendly cubes that bring all the fresh flavor and nutrition you need all in one convenient package!

Each Kibbutz-born cube is equal to one teaspoon of the ingredient, so they can be used in recipes as well. Speakoing of recipes, the Dorot Gardens website (www.dorotgardens.com) has many of its own, including ginger honey chicken, shakshukla, tabouleh salad, and even drinks like the morning detox, turmeric latte, and strawberry banana mule that allows people to drink their daily vitamins in a delicious (and potentially alcoholic) beverage form!

Dorot’s all-natural products are free of artificial preservatives and ingredients. They are vegan, gluten-free, and free of dairy, soy, or nuts. They are also non-GMO, OU kosher, and halal. Find them in the frozen vegetable section of your favorite grocery store. Dorot Gardens products are distributed by KAYCO.

With portions that work for home cooks and industrial chefs alike, Dorot Gardens offers great ways to bring more nutrition to families or companies of any size and to help maintain health and productivity for al involved.

Bon appétit!

From Eastern Standard to Pressles, I have had many an opportunity to enioy one of my favorite foods- pretzels.

And while many come plain or salted and ready for dipping into chocolate, mustards, hummuses, or pretty much anything else, Suzanne Foley at Port City Pretzels boldly offers only pre-flavored pretzels.

And what flavors they are!

From their original and intense butter-baked ranch dill to a sweet and satisfying cinnamon sugar (a fan favorite among my family) and their other side of the tastebud-tantalizing cayenne-capped feisty hot, the menu (which will soon add a tangy mustard and honey) offers a wide range in a small set.

Certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, Port City Pretzels are certifiably yummy and can expand the repertoire of even the most devoted pretzel fan.

Whie they are based in Portsmouth, NH Port City Pretzels are available across the country and also at https://portcitypretzels.com, so you can enjoy the People’s Pretzel wherever you are (and enjoy you WILL!)

Despite the pandemic, the latest edition of the Boston Wine Festival at the Boston Harbor Hotel was a huge success.

As their latest encore, the Hotel is reopening its popular Rowes Wharf Bar on weekends from 5 to 11 PM.

Named one of the top 45 hotel bars in the world by Forbes Travel Guide, the Rowes Wharf Bar has long been known both for its creative cocktails (many of which include items from the city’s most extensive selection of fine scotches) and delicious food (which comes courtesy orf master Chef Daniel Bruce).

Among Chef Bruce’s reopening repasts are Maine lobster crostini, maple and chili wings, and a locally-sourced cheese and charcuterie board, any of which can be accompanied by such made-to-order mixes as rum punch, a gin fizz, or mint julep, all of which are made with fresh fruits, herbs, and botanicals.

So if you are yet to venture downtown, the reopening of the Rowes Wharf Bar is surely a good reason and one that you can feel safe and secure making.

Bon appétit!

While many (especially in the Boston area) are preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 15, Ireland’s neighbors in Wales get ahead of the game with their own patron saint’s day – St David’s Day – on March 1.

Instead of corned beef and cabbage, many Welsh celebrats enjoy the traditional Welsh soup known as cawl and, of course, Welsh rarebit. For those really in the know, there is no better way to sweeten the day than with traditional Welsh cakes from Copper Kettle Bakery in Westwood, MA.

A Welsh cake is griddled mix of scones, biscuits, and pancakes and they are delicious with butter and preserves (which Copper Kettle Bakery also sells) or flavored (as Copper Kettle’s are) with berries, nuts, and chocolate chips. Copper Kettle Bakery offers their traditional Welsh Cakes ready made or as a mix for you to make yourself.  They can be eaten cold or warmed and are delicious either way!

Though Copper Kettle baker Helen Coates no longer uses bacon fat to cook her Welsh Cakes pies (and emphasizes that customers need not use it either), she continues to capture the essence of the family recipe she has been using since she was four and customers continue to rave and to tell her that one taste of her cakes takes them on a trip to Wales (even if they have never actually been there!).

So before you go out and kiss some people in green (if you are both wearing masks that is), why not try a Welsh favorite and get another taste of the UK?

With all the restaurants and food friends that have not made it out of the pandemic, it is all the more encouraging to talk about one that continues to thrive, especially when it is one of my personal favorites!

Farm Grill and Rotisserie is about to celebrate 25 years in Newton. And though their traditional Greek Day celebration is not possible right now, the Iliades family (which also runs the Greek International Food Market in West Roxbury) will be celebrating with special menu items and other ways for people to enjoy their deliciuous, freshly-made and Mediterranean Diet-approved delights.

Speakinh of the Mediterranean Diet, Farm Grill has also been working with Registered dietitian and nutrition educator Cindy Crowninshield, who recently wrote about the benefits of Greek foods on the Farm Grill website (www.farmgrill.com).

In their everlasting effors to support the community, Farm Grill will be holding a raffle with proceeds going to other businesses in the area! Starting in April, they will also be donating their amazing soups to the Newton Food Pantry.

If you are looking for a way to support hem but cannot make it to Newton, the Farm Grill’s famed Greek dressing is now available for home delivery at https://newenglandcountrymart.com. The best way to enjoy, however, is to make the ffort to drop by, say hello to Alexi and the family, and share the nutritious delicious goodness with your family so both of you can keep going strong!

Bon appétit!

Though my new favorite Peruvian place – Tambo 22 in Chelsea – was open for Valentine’s Day, it is again taking a Covid-induced siesta and I am already salivating at the prospect of their reopening!

In the meantime, I have found a new Peruvian connection in the form of Pisco Alegre, a totally authentic take on the national beverage of Peru that has been brought to America by a totally authentic Peruvian who is hustling like I have rarely seen a food entrepreneur hustle!

And with good reason- Pisco Alegre is deliciously crafted in the traditional yet rebellious way it has always been made, going all the way back to when King Philip IV of Spain put taxes on Peruvian’s wine and the clever Peruvians beat him by using their native spirit to make a new native spirit. Bornin the oldest distillery in the Americas (which dates back to 1684!), Alegre is smooth and delicious on its own but also works beautifully in a bar-full of delicious recipes (many of which are available on the website, www.piscoalegreus.com).

Blended from estate-grown grapes, it is unaged, uncut, and distilled to proof, so it retains and emphasizes the proud flavors and spirit of Peru.

Whether or not you have been to Peru, get a taste of another amazing culture with Pisco Alegre.

What does an author, actor, and producer do after coming back from serving as an Army combat field medic and specialist in the Middle East?

Why start a food-related not-for-profitt, of course!

At least that is what Mindy Dougherty thinks!

Feed My City helps people and plants grow by teaching the people how to release anxiety, depression, and even PTSD through the meditative, productive, and life-supporting and productive practice of gardening. Based on a philosophy of one seed, one plant, and one garden at a time, Dougherty tries to support her fellow Veterans and others by encouraging them to help themselves. In addition to having a new means of relaxing and getting in touch with nature, Mindy emphasizes how growing flowers and foods not only sustains the gardeners but their communities as well.

In addition, Dougherty and her fellow city feeders also donate the bounty to area food banks and other support organizations.

Putting her military-endowed dedication and discipline to work, Doughterty hopes to grow her venture tso that many more can grow for themselves and others.

To learn more and get involed (and to learn about Dougherty’s book, The Resilient Warrior), please go to www.feedmycity.net.
