The (Copper) House on the Corner: Contemporary Waltham eatery serves booming business sector and beyond (Originally posted 6/17)

As more and more companies pour into the 128 corridor in Waltham, the hospitality industry has being working overtime to handle the traffic.  From new eateries like Whole House Group’s family-friendly Flank to suburban outposts of Bonefish Grill, Posto and Ruth’s Chris, the area is getting to be known for much more than a highway-side Market Basket. While the hotel scene also strives to keep pace, one rentable residence offers the best of both worlds, having tucked into its lower corner a hotel restaurant that is well worth a visit even if you do not intend to stay.

With its tap-laden bar and beer-inspired décor, Copper House Tavern (http://copperhousetavern.com) in the Best Western may appear at first like an after work bar. And it is that- with over 40 craft beers that are conveniently organized by type (e.g., IPA, Pilsner, Belgian-style, cider, etc.) and available in flights so guests can find new favorites all the time, as well as glasses and bottles of wine from near and far, entire menus of Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch Tequila, Port, and Cognac, and craft cocktails that range from a signature Tito’s vodka-based Kicking Mule to a tantalizingly tasty cinnamon-spiced cranberry whiskey sour to seasonal selections and a handcrafted Sangria.

No Beauty School Dropouts Here: South End spot brings flair back to French food (Originally posted 6/17)

Though it has been many years since I lived anywhere near the South End, I have recently found another reason (other than my long-time fave, Tremont 647) to head back to the old neighborhood.

Frenchie (www.frenchieboston.com) is a new twist on classic French cuisine that is authentically, beautifully, and deliciously pulled off by French natives Sandrine Rossi and Loic Le Garrec (who, as may not surprise anyone who loves good French food with flair, also runs Petit Robert Bistro).

Blaze-ing a New Trail in Fast Casual: Blaze Pizzeria shows how it’s done…FAST (Originally posted 6/17)

I have seen the future of fast casual pizza- right before my eyes!

While many places allow you to (ostensibly) design your own pie, Blaze Pizza (www.blazepizza.com) literally lets you do it step by mouth-watering step as you move through their blaze-ingly efficient line. From crust (regular, double-thick or gluten-free) to sauces (including a cream, pesto, and super-delish spicy tomato sauce) to cheeses (multiple mozzarellas, as well as gorgonzola, goat, ovalini, and other dairy (or dairy-free) delights) to toppings (too many to list- but they include a deli case-load of meats of all kinds and a produce section’s worth of veggies) to finishing drizzles of balsamic, olive oil, or even ranch dressing, Blaze offers enough options to keep even the most methodical pizza-file busy for years. And as each pizza is fired in 180 seconds, (that’s three minutes to the rest of us!), it is a place where you can just as easily run by for a quick (and we mean “quick”) bite or linger and take in the sights and sounds of other savory selections. With their new app, you can even order ahead and have the freshly fired when you arrive.

I Left My (Satisfied) Hunger in Cambridge: Benedetto continues proud tradition at Charles Hotel (Originally posted 5/17)

As I was a music writer before I was a food journalist, I have a long and storied history with the Charles Hotel and its world-famous Regattabar. Many has been the night when I would enjoy an evening repast at one of the Hotel’s many fine dining establishments and then head to the second floor to catch a legend close up and personal.

So you can imagine my dismay when I learned that Jody Adams’ equally legendary Rialto was moving out and how worried I was that its successor would not live up to its reputation or classy deliciousness.

I need not have worried!

Fan of Cozy Tartufo: Newton Centre restaurant is a passage to Italy (Originally posted 4/17)

Years ago, there was an ad on TV that suggested that a night at Rosalie’s in Marblehead was like a night in Milan.

While Rosie’s may be no more, it is still possible to find out-of-the-way gems that not only offer delicious family fare but, if given the opportunity, transformative and transporting experiences.

Tartufo Cucina Abruzzese in Newton Centre (www.tartuforestaurant.com) is one such place.

Welcome (Back?) ‘Cue! (Originally posted 4/17)

Despite the recent explosion of food options in the Downtown area- from the Mediterranean masterpieces at Bonapita and Verts to all the delicious options at Boston Public Market – one category has been notably absent. That is until now.

After 20 years of holding down the corporate lunch gig through their popular Viga, TX natives Edward and Shawn Wilson (who cleverly combined not only their Lone Star loves but their names to put this new place together) have opened Shed’s on Bromfield Street (www.shedsbbq.com).
