Tasting Japanese: Ogawa brings flavors of “sister city” to Boston (Originally posted 11/15)

The Kingdom of Japan has brought many amazing, market-leading developments to our shores- from the economical car to the personal stereo. Now, the Land of the Rising Sun brings us a new gift with which we can greet the sun each day or savor its setting.

Based in Boston’s sister city of Kyoto, Ogawa Coffee (www.ogawacoffeeusa.com) has planted its first States-side flag in the Hub of the Universe with a beautiful and flavor-ful establishment on Milk Street.

Ogawa Coffee

Posing itself as a “student” of coffee that is eager to drink in the flavors of its new surroundings, Ogawa literally wrote the book on Latte (CEO and President Yoshinori Uda penned “The Handbook of Latte Art”) and baristas are personally trained by Haruna Murayama, the first female winner of the World Latte Art Championship. While they have much to crow about, the shop itself is calm and subdued, with natural woods and calming, comfortable surfaces, including retractable wooden bleachers that can be used for group seating at peak hours or for Ogawa’s regular series of demonstrations and classes that further engage guests in a new world of flavor and enjoyment.

In addition to some of the freshest and most consciously-harvested single-origin coffees in the world, Ogawa also offers Kalita coffee and Aero-press preparations. For those who want to stray from the coffee road, Ogawa also has tempting teas, luscious matcha, tea and chia lattes, cozy cocoas, and smashing matcha and fruit smoothies. As many of their beans and bags are available for home use, they also stock a full retinue of coffee ware, including drippers, filters, mugs and other accouterments, and featuring Kyoto-born kiyomizo cups that are hand-painted with seasonal designs. To accompany your favorite beverage (which regular guests rediscover every few days), Ogawa provides seasonal salads, soups, sandwiches, and snacks, as well as conveniently curated “lunch boxes” that are a great way to bring some zen back to our hectic office. If you need an extra-long break or just an extra-sweet treat, cake rolls and sundaes are also prepared behind the long bar/presentation area.

Open seven days a week, Ogawa is a great spot to stop before, after, or instead of the office or as a mid-shopping trip warm up or pre-party recharge. No matter when you go, you are sure to find an exotic taste that is sure to start a new revolution in the Colonies.
