The return of Virginia Dare (Originally posted 12/15)

Virginia Dare

One of the best-known names in film and in wine  is Francis Ford Coppola. Recently, his winery has revived another big name in grapes- that of Virginia Dare.

Originally founded in 1835, the Virginia Dare winery is based on the 400-year-old  “mother vine” from Roanoke Island, North Carolina, which was one of the earliest European settlements on the North American continent. The legend of the mysterious disappearance of Virginia Dare – the first English child born in the New World – lived on as the name of one of the young nation’s most popular wines and original wine companies. A pioneer in the post-Prohibition industry, the company behind the original Virginia Dare wine fell apart. Fortunately, the popular wine was recently revived in Sonoma County by Francis Ford Coppola, who now uses Ms. Dare’s name and beautiful image on a new set of delicious wines in bottles that are works of art even after being emptied.
