Another Nation Heard From: Shanti brings AMAZING and authentic Indian to Kendall Square (Originally posted 2/16)

As the tech and bio tech industries continue to bring the world to Kendall Square, even more eateries have popped up to satisfy their every desire. From EVOO’s Italian to Mamaleh’s Jewish-style deli to Andy Husband’s saliva-inducing BBQ, Cambridge’s “Third Square” has been diversifying by the day.

And yet, there has been no great place for Indian food…. Until now!

Thanks to the wisdom of the Kendall Square Business Association, the local legend known as Shanti has finally come to Cambridge.

With a space that is just as clean and perhaps a bit more contemporary than its scrumptious siblings in Dorchester and Roslindale (and the Dudley Square Café, which also serves select Shanti favorites), the Kendall Shanti is long and lean, with deep red duct work forming a constructioned canopy over dark woods, decorative fixtures, and simple Indian artwork. As the space is so simply and tastefully decorated, it is all the easier to focus on the food- which is a good thing because, as always, it is the focus.

Overseen by Executive Chef Ananda (“Andy”) Pokhrel, the gleaming kitchen sports two fiery Tandoor ovens and all the fresh ingredients the uber-creative cook needs to make his menu sing. Among the popular favorites (many of which are available at the always satisfying lunch buffet) are the crispy and well-filled samosa (toasted turnovers with either minced lamb or veggies), Aloo Gobi (cauliflower with potatoes and peas), Begun Bharta (roasted eggplant with mustard seeds, cardamom, peas, and cilantro), Bhindi Masala (spiced fresh okra with tomatoes and onions), chicken, lamb or shrimp Tikka (marinated with spices and yogurt), and fresh and fragrant Basmati rice. A trip to Shanti is not complete without the unleavened bread known as Naan (which is offered in varieties ranging from savory garlic and onion to sweet Peshwary with raisins, pistachios, almonds, and coconut), and desserts like Kheer (rice pudding) and Gulab Jamun (cheese ball in syrup- really! Try them!) offer a sweet way to end your dining experience. Shanti also offers Indian beer and wine, as well as fresh fruit juices and healthful Lassi yogurt shakes.

While Shanti is well worth a trip no matter where you are, it is good to know that a whole new world of people will be able to find it in their own backyard. And with catering and delivery in the works, Shanti will be able to bring all your Subcontinent favorites right to you!
