Haley House 50th Anniversary

Boston is known for its many generous citizens and organizations. From David Mugar and the Lynch family to the Patriots’ Head Mensch Bob Kraft, we Bostonians know how to give back.

One of the longest-running and most successful charitable organizations is Haley House, which this year is celebrating 50 years with a special celebration the weekend of December 2-4.

In their enduring effort to affirm the dignity in every person, Haley House helps people facing difficult times to develop skills and a sense of self through training, employment, and even housing. At their famous soup kitchen on Dartmouth Street in the South End and at Haley House Bakery Cafe in Roxbury’s Dudley Square (near the already famed Dudley Café), volunteers serve healthy, made-from-scratch food for all. Their latest innovation, Dudley Dough, is a fair-wage shop in Dudley Square’s historic Bolling Building that serves what the Haley House team calls “pizzas with purpose.” Their Take Back the Kitchen program teaches children and teens how to prepare healthier meals.  Every Saturday from 5-8pm, Haley House’s Community Tables program hosts a local chef who prepares a three-course meal using mostly donated produce from different farms at a “pay what you want” rate so everyone can enjoy. They also cater, so it is easy to bring the great food and great feelings to your home or office.
