Strip T’s

Matt regularly appears with Jordan Rich on “Connoisseur’s Corner” which airs on WBZ (http://boston.cbslocal.com) weekdays at 11:55 AM.

The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s forthcoming segments:

Years ago, I taught boxing at a Watertown gym near the Arsenal Mall. Just across the street was a friendly-looking restaurant called Strip T’s that had what appeared to be a dancing piece of bacon in its logo. As I was usually full of protein powder when I went to teach, I never stopped to eat.

Boy did I miss out!

Fortunately, a recent evening of amazing theatre at the New Rep gave me reason to stop in for a meal.

It was amazing!

In the same way that the décor ranges from the diner counter, soda case, and vintage tube TV set in the main area to the hand-hammered ceiling tiles and contemporary art in the side dining space, the menu offers a wide range of flavors that come from local and far-flung sources. Among the highest high points are a Caesar salad that bursts with tangy flavor, their worth-the-trip Moxie wings, fried chicken with Tabasco collard greens, spinach gnocchi, and a list of “sandos” (their hip variation on sandwiches) that includes an umami-rich Japanese eggplant Banh Mi and their signature Strip T’s burger (the worthy successor to the sirloin strip that is actually the image in the logo).

While Strip T’s can make for a great pre-theatre meal, it is well worth seeking on its own. So while I invite people to come to Newton for my Tuesday night boxing classes, I also encourage them to go by Strip T’s any night for great food in an unassumingly fun and funky space.

Don’t make the mistake I did- Go tonight!
