Boston Local Food Fest

As Boston becomes more of a thought leader in the food space, it ha also become a leader in the local food craze. Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than at the Boston Local Food Fest which will be returning for its seventh year on September 18 from 11-5 all along the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

At this free, zero-waste farmers market, fans of fresh local fare can enjoy the latest tastes and meet the people who make them possible.

In addition to over 100 vendors that range from Alex’s Ugly Sauce, Allendale Farm, and Apotheker’s honey-sweetened sweets to ChikChak food truck, Flour Bakery, FoMu dairy-free frozen dessert, Fresh Box Farm and Golden Girl Granola to Maple Water, Minus the Moo lactose-free ice cream, Olivia’s Organics, Red Apple Farm, Spindrift Soda, and Taza Chocolate, the Fest will also feature an educational and entertaining Family Fun Zone presented by Trustees of Reservations, a chef demonstration stage and live music. For the pescetarians, there will also be a seafood throwdown and fish fileting tutorial sponsored by the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance.

“Fresh Made Simple” Cookbook

Matt regularly appears with Jordan Rich on “Connoisseur’s Corner” which airs on WBZ (http://boston.cbslocal.com) weekdays at 11:55 AM.

The following is a “script” for one of Matt’s forthcoming segments:

“Fresh Made Simple”

I love to cook. But with so many meals eaten out and so many other assignments to tackle, it can be hard to find the time to prepare and enjoy the foods I like most.

I recently found a cookbook that may hold they key, however.

It is called Fresh Made Simple and it is by local food writer Lauren K. Stein.

Unlike many other cookbooks, each of the 75 recipes in Fresh Made Simple is based upon a simple ingredient that most of us probably already have on hand and then built up from there in fewer than five steps. Therefore, you do not have to go shopping for a recipe and, even if you are lacking a piece or two, there is room for improvisation and fun. Also, the illustrations are just that- drawings by Katie Eberts that show more than tell. As such, even unfamiliar processes become second nature and there is less of a feeling of insecurity when the meal does not come out looking like the picture. As it is drawn, the book also appeals a good deal to younger chefs and can be a great introduction to the wonders (and science-related concepts) of cooking.

So whether you want to make a slice of watermelon into a salad or dress up some odd eggs, Fresh Made Simple is just that and a lot of fun to use!

If the traffic that has intensified since Chestnut Hill Square opened has not worn you out, a day of shopping at the trendy new center certainly will! From Anthropologie and Athleta to Francesca’s and Sail Loft  (and, of course, Wegman’s), the Square offers a variety of places to pick up everything from gowns to groceries, as well as a bank and Beth Israel-affiliated medical center. It is truly a one-stop shop for the non-stop shopper.

Fortunately, the Square also offers a variety of popular refueling stations. In addition to Starbucks and the afore-reviewed Brio (see last issue), there is a new pair of “sweet“-ly named eateries each of which makes for a visit-worthy stop and both of which make for a perfect combo of healthy and rewarding.
